Based on observations coming in from the field, it appears the mid-bay 2008 bloom event is underway. The pictures and story in the Miami Herald (http://www.miamiherald.com/983/story/520306.html), mostly from an interview with Pete, indicate that Twin Keys Basin is pea green already. Historically, this appears to be an early onset for an algal bloom - what remains to be seen is if it builds to a significant and damaging event as was observed last year.

BY JIM WAYMER

Florida Today

Scientists have identified the brown blob that floated across the Indian River Lagoon in northern Brevard this month as an extreme case of a common algae.

Researchers identified the algae as a species somewhat related to red tide but without the toxic effects.

The brownish algae frothed up into thick, gelatinous globs that blanketed the lagoon's banks from Melbourne to Titusville.

Sponges next victim of algae bloom

Experts debate inevitability of such events

BY ROBERT SILK

Citizen Staff

An intense blue-green algae bloom that spread across Florida Bay this summer has prompted a massive sponge die off.

"What we have found in the areas we have surveyed thus far is basically the total destruction of the sponge community," said Mark Butler, a marine ecologist who has monitored ...

Just got back from a trip through Florida Bay and glad to report that water clarity is pretty much back to normal in the northern and central part of Florida Bay. What a drastic difference from just 3 weeks ago. Water in the area of Rabbit Key Basin down to the Arsenickers and West across 9 mile bank still looked real bad though.

Algae bloom causes problems for beachgoers

By Heather Civil

Monday October 15th, 2007

SANTA ROSA BEACH -- The effects of a red tide that gave many beachgoers grief during the weekend continue.

A red tide algae bloom near Bay County is probably what is causing local beachgoers problems as the wind carries it, said Sherman Wilhelm with the state Department of Consumer and Agricultural Services Division of Aquaculture.

The algae bloom in the vicinity of the 18 mile stretch (just north of Key Largo) has not abated. Although the extent of the bloom is not nearly as great as it was previously, levels of chlorophyl a (an indicator of algae abundance) are still very high around the vicinity of the road construction.

Reports from a witness getting aerial views from an airplane report water is still "very green and bad looking" around the road construction site.

As of Oct 10, 07, the bloom is still in place in the same general vicinity although water around Lower Matecumbe and Long Key does not appear to be as bad as it was just a couple weeks ago. Collaboration efforts between a number of different agencies including NOAA, FWC, and FIU are currently underway and it appears like there is going to be excellent research and monitoring efforts in relation to this bloom. Water quality monitoring efforts show that levels of chlorophyl a (an indicator of ...

Fish kills increase with red tide bloom

By Jeremy Morrison

ST. ANDREWS STATE PARK

Splashing in the shallows near the jetty at St. Andrews State Park on Monday, two children enjoyed a swim. A few yards away, a fish floated upside down. More dead fish dotted the shoreline. Near a large, sand-crusted redfish, Ed and Kathy Glaze sat in lawn chairs and watch their grandson and great-niece play in the water. “We promised him ...

Hi.

This is something of an experiment.

What we're hoping for is to create an online community for people like you to share sightings, pictures and insights into the algae blooms infecting Florida Bay and other locales around the state.

Up there at the top of the screen, next to "calendar", is the gallery function where theoretically you can upload your pictures. There's also a way to do it when making posts. Hopefully it's all pretty self explanatory. We'll see.
